Kannon
Thomasâs body landing on my hip woke me from the best sleep Iâd had in years. My neck was a little stiff, but these days, I always woke up to something hurting. I tried to stretch my arms and legs out, but something hindered my progress. I jerked up, groaning at the twinge in my ribs, and balked at the grumbling man that I had been laying on.
âFuck, this couch is terrible to sleep on.â He grouches, and my face flames in embarrassment.
âOh my gosh, try to sit up. Are you okay? Iâm so sorry, I think I fell asleep on youâ¦.again.â I jump up, quicker than my ribs thought I shouldâve. I hissed in a sharp breath and tried to stop moving, but Dalton was up and at me before I knew what happened.
âWhat is it? You okay? Something hurt?â He asks urgently, his hands moving around me, but not touching me.
âMy side. Think I got up too fast.â I gasped, trying to breathe through the already subsiding pain. âI keep forgetting about it until I move a certain way and it reminds me. Iâm fine though, promise.â Dalton nods, seeming to relax now that he sees that Iâm okay, but before either of us can say anything, weâre interrupted by a soft tap from the front door. Dalton moves around me and checks the peephole before opening the door and letting his mother in.
âYou boys just get up? I was going to take you both out to breakfast.â She beams, taking in our sleep rumpled and disheveled appearance.
âToo early,â Dalton mumbles, rubbing the sleep from his eyes while his mother watched him with an amused grin.
âNonsense, itâs after nine. You boys go wash up and Iâll put on a pot of coffee.â She offers, shuffling herself into the kitchen with only a small bag of what I assume is something sheâs picked up at the market on her way over.
I join her in the kitchen as Dalton excuses himself to the restroom first. I was having a hard time looking at him, wondering if he was grouchy because it was morning, or because he hadnât wanted to stay here last night. I hadnât meant to fall asleep on him, but the days had caught up to me and he was just so warm. I didnât even remember falling asleep.
âHow are you feeling, sweetheart? Yesterday was a tough day, huh?â I didnât want to think about yesterday at all, but it would be rude not to answer, especially since she had me wrapped in soft hug.
âIâm okay.â That seemed to be my mantra lately. I thought maybe if I said it enough, it would start to come true. She didnât seem to believe me, but like always, she didnât push.
âAnd what did you and my charming, handsome son get up to last night, hmm?â She waggled her eyes at me, mischievously. Surely, she didnât think that anything happened between us? Iâm⦠broken, for lack of a better word.
