Chapter: Eleven

Kannon

Thomas’s body landing on my hip woke me from the best sleep I’d had in years. My neck was a little stiff, but these days, I always woke up to something hurting. I tried to stretch my arms and legs out, but something hindered my progress. I jerked up, groaning at the twinge in my ribs, and balked at the grumbling man that I had been laying on.

“Fuck, this couch is terrible to sleep on.” He grouches, and my face flames in embarrassment.

“Oh my gosh, try to sit up. Are you okay? I’m so sorry, I think I fell asleep on you….again.” I jump up, quicker than my ribs thought I should’ve. I hissed in a sharp breath and tried to stop moving, but Dalton was up and at me before I knew what happened.

“What is it? You okay? Something hurt?” He asks urgently, his hands moving around me, but not touching me.

“My side. Think I got up too fast.” I gasped, trying to breathe through the already subsiding pain. “I keep forgetting about it until I move a certain way and it reminds me. I’m fine though, promise.” Dalton nods, seeming to relax now that he sees that I’m okay, but before either of us can say anything, we’re interrupted by a soft tap from the front door. Dalton moves around me and checks the peephole before opening the door and letting his mother in.

“You boys just get up? I was going to take you both out to breakfast.” She beams, taking in our sleep rumpled and disheveled appearance.

“Too early,” Dalton mumbles, rubbing the sleep from his eyes while his mother watched him with an amused grin.

“Nonsense, it’s after nine. You boys go wash up and I’ll put on a pot of coffee.” She offers, shuffling herself into the kitchen with only a small bag of what I assume is something she’s picked up at the market on her way over.

I join her in the kitchen as Dalton excuses himself to the restroom first. I was having a hard time looking at him, wondering if he was grouchy because it was morning, or because he hadn’t wanted to stay here last night. I hadn’t meant to fall asleep on him, but the days had caught up to me and he was just so warm. I didn’t even remember falling asleep.

“How are you feeling, sweetheart? Yesterday was a tough day, huh?” I didn’t want to think about yesterday at all, but it would be rude not to answer, especially since she had me wrapped in soft hug.

“I’m okay.” That seemed to be my mantra lately. I thought maybe if I said it enough, it would start to come true. She didn’t seem to believe me, but like always, she didn’t push.

“And what did you and my charming, handsome son get up to last night, hmm?” She waggled her eyes at me, mischievously. Surely, she didn’t think that anything happened between us? I’m… broken, for lack of a better word.
